Istanbul Toy Museum displays a collection of toys including the world's important toys, created by the poet-writer Sunay Akın. In the museum a lot of information is given about the history of toys. Akın says that the history of toys, which are very important for the development of children, is at the same time the history of dreams.
Can you tell us the story of establishment of this museum that brings together toys?
In 1968, when I was 6 years old, my family and I came to Istanbul from Trabzon to see the city. The first place my father took us to visit in Istanbul was the Archeological Museum. Could you imagine how many families who came from Anatolia to Istanbul would first go to the Archeological Museum. But my father took us there and I was very impressed.
In any city of the world that I had the chance to travel, I always visited the museums there. My life was spent in museums. If I remember correctly, in 1991, I visited a toy museum for the first time in Nuremberg, Germany. I had never been to a toy museum before. I went early in the morning. My plan was to visit as many museums as I could. But in the evening the attendant came and said “Sir, we're closing.." I had spent all the day at the Nuremberg Toy Museum though my plan was to see also other museums.
I was extremely impressed. I realized that the history of toys is the history of dreams. I mean, people first dreamed and then pursued and realized their dreams. The truth followed the footsteps of dreams. This is the story which all toys museums will tell. No other museum than a toy museum can illustrate so well the history of civilization from fashion to architecture, or from space conquest to wars, sorry to say. Toy museums are museums of history of civilization. I saw it and envied it. Then I realized that all the developed countries and developed cities have toy museums. Thinking to myself, "‘Why shouldn't there be a toy museum in my country in Istanbul, the most beautiful city in the world?", I put the copyrights of my one-man stage plays, the income of my books and the 5-storied mansion in Göztepe that I inherited from my family to the purpose of this dream, and established Istanbul Toy Museum on April 23, 2005.
What is the most important feature of Istanbul Toy Museum?
The most important thing that distinguishes Istanbul Toy Museum from other toy museums in the world is that it has been designed by stage design artists, sculptors and painters. I mean, the toys are of course behind the window, the child cannot touch the, and must also learn not to touch the toys. But how will the child overcome the feeling of playing with that toy? Therefore, we designed every room and every place like a theater stage. This aspect is very important. I mean, compared to the other similar museums in the world, the toy museum is a place that children are like an actor in a theater play.
What has changed and been added to the museum since 2005?
Much has changed in terms of toy collection over the years. I mean, when the museum was initially opened, there were nearly a thousand museums in the world working on children's history. We were in a good rank at that time. But today we are one of the best five museums. First of all, we owe this to our visitors and our colleagues here.
I've been constantly updating this collection for 14 years. There have been toy factories in the toy history whose toys befit to a toy museum just in the same way as a painting of Osman Hamdi Bey, Bedri Rahmi Eyuboglu, Hoca Ali Riza Efendi, Ibrahim Calli, Monet, Van Gogh, Chagall and Picasso befits a museum of art. In other words, every toy is suitable to be displayed in a museum. We should exhibit the works of the first toy factories which have such a value, just like the names of the artists I just mentioned. In the meantime I gradually expanded the collection. We are currently presenting the world's most exclusive and rare toys in Istanbul to serve as a memory to the whole world.
How did this collection come together? How many toys are there?
These toys are not objects sold in the marketplace or in shops. Collectors have very valuable collections. They preserve them in their homes as their personal belongings. Sometimes they sell them. Why? Maybe he wishes to change his collection, wants to buy another toy, or go on a world tour or marry his daughter, that's not the point. Why should he give it to you?
I bought every toy in Istanbul Toy Museum from collectors as if I were to ask for their daughter to marry. I mean, a father is concerned when someone comes and asks for permission to get married to his daughter, and I have a daughter. I am worried about what kind of a person the groom is, and is he the right man for my daughter. I felt the same worries when I collected the toys. So it was never easy to secure trust. To repeat, these are special belongings These are not commercial materials to be sold. These are personal belongings of people who have preserved them for years, and doted on as if a child. Why would they give them to you? These are very valuable, really valuable financially. They ask who you are and why should he give them to you?
It was never easy to secure trust. In time, we patiently have come to such a point that anywhere in the world, when I say "Istanbul Toy Museum, My name is Sunay Akın" many collectors will give that very valuable toy they wish to say goodbye to. We have won that trust as Istanbul Toy Museum. Bringing this collection together has never been easy.
First, I learned the history of toys, and that not every toy is fit to be displayed in a museum. Just as any sculpture, drawing, or painting cannot be displayed in a museum, any toy cannot be displayed in a toy museum. Some criteria apply. First of all, I improved myself to build that knowledge for 5 years. Meanwhile, I visited hundreds of toy museums. I made studies on game museums, fairy tale museums and children's history. After 5 years of hard work, I bought my first toy. It was a toy horse I bought from an antique shop in Berlin. When I bought it I said “You and I are going to Istanbul Toy Museum.” Just like starting a journey on a horse, I first took the horse to my house, where it remained in the guest room. When my friends came and asked “What's that” I would reply: "The first work of Istanbul Toy Museum.”
Could you please talk a little bit more about the importance of that toy?
The first toy factories emerged in Nuremberg region in Germany after the industrial revolution. For example, Steiff made the first teddy bear. Marklin made trains. They are important as being the firsts of their kind, and their conditions are also important. They were produced in low quantities. There are also 150-year-old doll houses. For example, it is very difficult to find the doll house of a watch seller, a cloth seller, or a butcher. All these are present in Istanbul Toy Museum.
The first toy factories were established in Germany. Toy industry developed in Japan after 1950. Rather than their condition, the brands and manufacturers of toys are very important. For example, Carette was a toy company. In 1915, Carette produced Titanic's toys. However, when the First World War broke out, it was shut down like many toy companies, and unfortunately produced weapons. We have one of the few Titanic toys manufactured by Carette.
Likewise, Marks was a toy company in US that produced Pinocchio toys. The company produced the toys of Pinocchio just like Walt Disney produced cartoons to introduce Pinocchio to the world. We have the first Pinocchio toy produced. In 1895, the first comic book hero Yellow Kid was published in The New York World. We have the toy of Yellow Kid, the first hero of the comic book history introduced in 1895. It is so valuable.
And do you know what else is there in Istanbul? In 1917, the US company Schoenhut made a Charlot toy for Charlie Chaplin. Charlot was the famous character played by Charlie Chaplin in silent cinema. Charlie Chaplin had a photograph taken with that toy. That Charlot toy of Charlie Chaplin is now on display in Istanbul Toy Museum. Do you know how valuable is it?
Fawn Zeller, for example, was a very famous porcelain doll designer. In 1954 he made a doll of Mona Lisa. Fawn Zeller says: “If there is one Mona Lisa, then there will be one doll.” That doll is also on display in Istanbul Toy Museum. Many other valuable works of toy history like these, which you cannot see in any other museum, are displayed in Istanbul Toy Museum, in Kadıköy, Istanbul.
You talked about the first toys, but which other toys are important for you?
I bought each of these toys from their owners as if I were asking for their permission to get married to their daughters, and brought them here, so they are very precious for me. First of all, it was financially difficult to reach them. Aside from financial challenges, it has never been easy to gain their trust and buy their toys, their personal belongings. That's why every one of them is so valuable to me.
Once I bought up, I brought most of them here myself, carrying them with care in my hands. Especially those porcelain dolls, oh God! Can you imagine how valuable those porcelain dolls are? I had a 120-130-year-old porcelain doll in my lap which I carried to Istanbul for days without hurting it like a real baby.
Istanbul deserves the best of everything. Believe me, this is a fairytale city, a magical city. Andersen, the famous fairy tale author, also came here and admired the city. Herman Melville, Admonde de Amicis also visited the city. Many people who came to Istanbul saw it as a magical city. Some go further to say that as if the shoe that Cinderella lost is in Istanbul. For that reason, a toy museum befits Istanbul.
What can you say about the interest shown by children?
The most important first step in education is museology. In fact, museums are schools. For that reason, we encourage children to embrace the culture of visiting museums and the idea of achieving and protecting knowledge. In a society, the idea of protectionism spreads from museums. In other words, if we want to protect our history, values and nature, we should offer more museums to our children. At least I can say that this is true when Istanbul Toy Museum is concerned. Parents tell me "After my kid visited your Toy Museum, he went home, and for the first time, he took any toys he had left on the floor, and put them in their places." Isn't that enough?
I also want to add that when a child enters the museum, and his/her parents hold his/her hand. The parents assume that they brought their child to visit. The family tours the museum, and when they exit, the parents hold the hands of their childhood. The parents' childhoods become friends with their children in Istanbul Toy Museum. Not just parents; grandfathers and grandmothers are among the visitors. A toy museum is the most important and unique places that three generations enjoy visiting.
Because it is a place where humanity and dreams have a common memory. Because childhood is not something that ends. Children like adventures. Children ask questions and are curious, and a child who is deprived of his or her freedom is called an adult. Do you know that all the walls that life has built around the brain will collapse here? We realize that we are still children, we are still curious, we can imagine, we strive to access knowledge. This reveals that people are childish.
Also workshops are organized here.
We organize so many workshops in a month. I can say that it is unique in Istanbul. We have wonderful workshops. These are organized by our managers here. Because children are a very important subject, we are organizing workshops with the best people in their field who have achieved the right level in their previous efforts with children. There are so many workshops. For example; we have a children's theater in our museum. There are also activities for adults. They say the education of a child starts in the mother's womb. So, we have trainings here for pregnant women. There are activities here before the children are born. There is a theater for adults. For example, adults arrive after the museum closes every Sunday and Monday evening. They visit the venue theater. In each room, actors act out toys. Toys are portrayed with their dreams and periods. This is not much common in the history of museology in the world, as far as I know it is the first. I mean, the Toy Museum also offers many services to its visitors as a cultural center.
Do you have any project for the near future?
We will have new activities in the new period. For example, we have started a new project in which musicians play classic music accompanied by ballerinas to introduce and inspire a love of classic music. It attracted intensive attention. We will continue this activity in the next period. We have children's plays. We have also the traditional puppet theatre. İbiş, the puppet, performed by Talat Dumanlı in the 150-year-old Gülhane Park, is still performed in Istanbul Toy Museum, at its 150th anniversary. I mean, the traditional puppet theater continues to exist here in the Toy Museum. These will be continued. The shadow play, Hacivat - Karagöz, will also be continued. There are infinitive number of activities for children. Activities are not only specific to children, but to their parents also.
Is there anything you would like to say about the museum in particular?
Museums are a memory of the society. In the same way as memories are essential for us, museums are essential for our country. If we do not realize the fact that museums are the memory of a society, we kind of catch Alzheimer's Disease. I mean, we should have more museums in Istanbul. It was with this motive that I founded the Toy Museum. Then I founded the Game Museum and Tale Museum.
I also have in mind a Children's Museum of Istanbul. A museum that tells about the relationship of the city and children in Istanbul. I have been working for this for years. There is another museum project that I wish to realize in Istanbul. a Cat Museum. Istanbul is famous for its cats. But, I tell about the cats in the history of dreams, children, games and toys. For example, Charles Lindergh crossed the Atlantic by his plane in 1927. He had a toy cat with him. Felix the Cat. He took the toy to bring him luck. There was a cat in the first plane that crossed the Atlantic. I want to collect other cats not yet known in the world of dreams. It must be a museum that will tell animal friendliness and nature friendliness of Istanbul and its society to the whole world. Istanbul needs them.
I invite everybody to Istanbul Toy Museum. Because this is the memory of our dreams. The toys we give to our children are in fact the future of our country and the entire humanity. If we give our children toys that will contribute to their games and mental development, we will have a happier and a better Turkey and world. If we wish to look to future of a country, please pay attention to the games and dreams of its children, not the people who govern it. The future of humanity always lies in the dreams.
