TRNC President Ersin Tatar who was in Istanbul within the scope of their visit to our country, and Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya, met with Cyprus veterans.
TRNC President Ersin Tatar, Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya, Provincial Gendarmerie Commander Brigadier General Nuh Köroğlu and Cyprus veterans came together at the Gendarmerie Command Social Facilities.
In the program that started with a moment of silence and the National Anthem, the President of the TRNC Tatar, the Provincial Gendarmerie Commander Brigadier General Köroğlu and the representative of the Cyprus veterans, Gazi Ahmet Külak delivered speeches to the participants.
In his speech in the program, President Tatar talked about what has happened in Cyprus throughout history and said that foreign powers have occupied the island and that Turkish Cypriots have always been waiting by looking at the Taurus Mountains.
President Tatar, emphasizing that the Turkish Cypriots in Turkey and abroad were resisting in Erenköy at that time, stated as follows: "This was our Çanakkale."
Explaining that on July 15, 1974, Greece staged a coup and overthrew Makarios, President Tatar continued as follows: "The Junta leader Sampson, who came from Greece, declared the Greek Republic of Cyprus, and then the Turkish Army arrived on the morning of July 20 with parachutes and ships. That day, the Turkish Cypriots reunited with Turkey. The foundations of two-state solution were laid that day."
Stating that he has been fighting for the rights and interests in the Eastern Mediterranean, President Tatar pointed out that the proposals made in Geneva on April 27-29, as expressed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, were a historical turning point and continued as follows: "The Federation book has been closed. The only way is the two-state solution."
Stating that he grew up in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus but lived in Turkey for nearly 10 years, President Tatar finished his speech as follows: “I worked as a senior manager in the Republic of Turkey for 10 years. I have very important memories and very important events that I have experienced here with Turkish people. I love you, these places, Turkey and Turkish people so very much. I am happy to share these feelings with you."
“We Will Ensure that Cyprus Remains as a Turkish Homeland Forever”
In his speech, Provincial Gendarme Commander Brigadier General Köroğlu stated as follows: "You have made us feel once again in our hearts the emotions experienced in the embrace of Turkish soldiers and fighters 47 years ago. We would like to express our endless gratitude."
Brigadier General Köroğlu continued as follows: "From 1963 to 1974, for 11 years, the mujahideen and Turkish soldiers, who resisted all kinds of oppression, continued their struggle to exist with dignity in the spirit of the National Anthem, and took the War of Independence as an example, wrote an epic in Cyprus, shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand. Our heroic army, together with our mujahideen, ensured the freedom and independence of the Turkish Cypriots 47 years ago. I would like to express my gratitude to our heroic veterans who enabled us to win this great victory and at the same time make us celebrate July 20 as a holiday. We will stand by our Cypriot brothers in all their troubles and against their enemies in every attack as we have done so far. We will ensure that Cyprus remains a Turkish homeland forever."
Brigadier General completed his speech as follows: "I wish God's mercy to all our martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the country, especially the great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the leader of the freedom struggle who made great efforts in the independence of the Turkish Cypriots, Dr. Fazıl Küçük, and the Founding President Rauf Raif Denktaş."
President Tatar signed the memoir after the speeches.
After the Governor Yerlikaya presented a gift to the President Tatar, the program was completed with a collective souvenir photo shoot.
