The Governorship of Istanbul held a commemoration ceremony for those who lost their lives in the Struma incident on February 24, 1942.
Deputy Governor of Istanbul Özlem Bozkurt Gevrek, the Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Istanbul Ambassador Murat Tamer, the Ambassadors and Consul Generals, the Deputy Mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul Hüseyin Aksu, the Rabbi of the Jewish Community İsak Haleva, the President of the Turkish Jewish Community İshak İbrahimzadeh, the author Aaron Nommaz and the spiritual leaders participated in the commemoration ceremony held in Sarayburnu.
Istanbul Deputy Governor Özlem Bozkurt Gevrek and author Aaron Nommaz, representing the Turkish Jewish community, delivered their speeches when addressing participants of the commemoration ceremony.
"Struma, a deep pain that we will always feel in our hearts"
Deputy Governor Özlem Bozkurt Gevrek said: “We have come together to commemorate the 79th anniversary of the Struma disaster. I respectfully commemorate the precious memories of the 768 innocent souls who lost their lives in this tragedy.
On December 12, 1941, when leaving the port of Constanta, Struma was carrying only innocent people whose sole purpose was to escape Nazi persecution and continue their lives in safe lands. As you know, when its engine broke in the open sea and became completely unusable off in Istanbul, it had to dock at Sarayburnu. The Turkish Red Crescent and the Turkish Jewish community mobilized to help Struma, and technicians were assigned to repair the ship’s fault. Our country made every effort possible with the States concerned to obtain the diplomatic authorizations necessary for the safe passage of the ship from our waters in order to reach the port of destination under the conditions of war and international law of that period.
But unfortunately; when Struma, left Sarayburnu on February 23, 1942 and had to head for the Black Sea, only a day after its departure, it was torpedoed by a Soviet submarine and 768 of the 769 passengers on board lost their lives as a result of this painful incident.
For the people of our country, this tragedy, whose traces will never fade, is a deep pain that we will always feel in our hearts, despite the intense diplomatic efforts that we deployed with the States concerned for 70 days during the World War II.” She shared the details of Struma's process with these sentences.
Expressing that the Struma incident was a painful experience, Deputy Governor Bozkurt Gevrek said: “The painful experiences of the past should teach us that the oppressed people have no identity. I commemorate those who lost their lives in the Struma incident, one of the countless human tragedies caused by the Holocaust, and I greet you on behalf of myself and my governor’s office." Then she finished her words.
"We Hope That Such Events Never Happen Again"
In his speech representing the Jewish community, author Aaron Nommaz underlined the importance for Humanity to commemorate the Struma incident in which 768 people, including 103 children, died 89 years ago.
Nommaz said: “I would have hoped to hear that Struma is commemorated with similar ceremonies in Israel and Romania. But unfortunately this is not done. The fact that our governorship allows us to do this ceremony here makes me proud as a Jew from Turkey." he said during his speech. Nommaz said in his speech: "We hope that no such event never happen again." and ended his statements.
Following the speeches, the Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Community of Turkey Isak Haleva prayed for the souls of those who lost their lives in the Struma incident.
The commemorative ceremony ended with the laying of a wreath on the sea after the prayer.
