Turkey's first camera museum "Hilmi Nakipoğlu Museum of Cameras" was founded in 1997 by Hilmi Nakipoğlu who has been interested in photography since his childhood. Hundreds of cameras, which had been used since 1896 witnessing many bitter sweet memories and wars, are on display at the museum in Bakırköy.
Describing his interest in photography and the founding adventure of the museum, Hilmi Nakipoğlu explained that he started his photography career by printing black and white photographs with 6x6 and 6x9 films. Nakipoğlu said, "I started photography by printing when I was 12 years old. I did not have a camera at that time. I took out the items from my mother's dowry chest and got into it. The dowry chest was a darkroom for me. It was the first and second developments in black and white with a pack of photograph cards. Photography means drawing with light. The basis of this work is black and white."
Nakipoğlu said, "I got out my mother's chest and opened the museum in 97'. Until 97, I started creating collections by purchasing cameras, sometimes two or three at a time, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. I was buying cameras from the bottom of the city walls, Beyazıt Istanbul University square, Beyazıt Mosque and its shopkeepers, old fashioners, mobile sellers, Hayyam Passage in Sirkeci, junk dealers in Bahariye and Tuesday Market. So I have collected 900 machines through purchase. I still keep collecting."
Expressing that he gave the name of his mother to Nefus Nakipoğlu Special Education Practice School, which is an institution where special students are educated and includes the museum, Nakipoğlu said, "There are no children with Down Syndrome in my family, but all children are ours. Therefore, we try to teach those children the way. More precisely, I try to learn to be human and we try to teach to be human."
Expressing that he wants the museum to be owned by everyone, Nakipoğlu said, "I may have bought these cameras, but if you come to visit, then it will be yours, if you do not, then only mine. There are traces of war, peace and history here. It is necessary to protect this history."
"Everything is based on Photography”
Providing information about the history of the photography, Nakipoğlu said, "The first permanent photograph was a photograph that was taken by the French chemist Joseph Niepce in 1826, looking through the window, taken for eight hours of exposure. Chimneys and roof are visible in the photo. Later, another Frenchman Louis Daguerre took the first human photo with his camera. Before the photography, there were classical artists, i.e. sculptor and painters in our lives. Before the invention of photography, they were sculpturing and portraying the aristocrats and rich people. These were oil paintings, in particular. Of course it takes days. During that time, they called photographers as sorcerers, and cameras as the devil's invention. The tripods used for the cameras were wooden at that time. According to the literature, they considered tripod as the devil's invention and rejected it. But then, in 1839, at the French Academy of Science calls that "Photography is now an art" and photography entered our lives."
Nakipoğlu mentioned about the process after the invention of photography and said, "The photographer take a photo, the sculptor sculpts by looking at a photo, and painter paints by looking at a photo. Thus, photography has reached to a level that everyone can benefit from. Radio, cinema, television, everything is based on photography. "Photography is the world in one frame," says the deceased Ara Güler. Therefore, although the photograph was taken in eight hours early on, it is possible to capture an image much faster as the values increase with the faster films and lenses in the later stages."
Nakipoğlu stated that the cameras have similar functionality with people, "The cameras have eyes, just like our eyes. It also has a memory like our memory. Therefore you capture an image on the film."
Everything about Photography is in the Museum
The museum, which was visited with great interest by photography enthusiasts, displays 900 cameras and accessories of various brands and sizes, starting with the camera produced in 1896 up to now. In the museum, it is possible to see portable cameras, non-portable studio type cameras, dual lens cameras, spy or mini cameras, cameras used with Leica film, cameras used with Polaroid film.
The museum allows us to view the entire technological and functional processes of cameras, from the huge camera produced in 1896 to the spy cameras produced in very small forms.
The museum which is located on the 4th floor of Bakırköy Nefus Nakipoğlu Special Education Practice School can be visited between 09:00 and 17:00 on weekdays.
