Peace and Freedom Day reception was held with the presence of TRNC President Ersin Tatar, visiting our country, and the participation of Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya.
A reception was held at the Istanbul Archaeological Museums under the auspices of the Istanbul Branch of the Cyprus Turkish Cultural Association and the Istanbul Consulate General of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on the occasion of the 47th anniversary of the July 20 Peace and Freedom Day.
The program was attended by TRNC President Ersin Tatar and his wife Sibel Tatar, Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya and his wife Hatice Nur Yerlikaya, 1st Army Commander General Musa Avsever, Cyprus Turkish Cultural Association Istanbul Branch President Zehra Bilge Eray, Cyprus veterans and guests.
In the program that started with a moment of silence and the National Anthem performed by the 1st Army Band, TRNC President Tatar, Governor Yerlikaya and Association President Eray delivered speeches to the participants.
“We Cannot Survive and Live Safely and Securely Without Turkey"
In his Tatar speech, the President of the TRNC stated as follows: "Turkish Cypriots have experienced great difficulties. The Turks were massacred. We went through genocide twice. The year 1878 is one of the most painful years for the Turkish Cypriots. That is because Cyprus, which we took from the Venetians after a one-year struggle in 1571, was leased by the British after 308 years of domination, and then unlawfully usurped. The Turkish Cypriots always looked at the Taurus Mountains, in solitude but without losing their hope."
Mentioning the unlawfulness in Cyprus throughout history, President of the TRNC Tatar stated that the foundations of a two-state life were laid with the Turkish soldiers' landing on the island in 1974.
Stating that the negotiations on how to establish a partnership with the federation negotiations that have been going on for years and how to maintain the balance between Turkey and Greece are still in progress, TRNC President Tatar gave information about the historical process.
KKTC President Tatar emphasized that they are in a great struggle at the point reached and that they follow the right policy for the national interests and future in the Eastern Mediterranean, and continued as follows: "When viewed from Cyprus, Turkey is very important for the security of the island. We cannot survive without Turkey, and cannot live safely and securely. Therefore, it is not possible for us to continue our existence constitutionally, politically and economically. We definitely need Turkey's guarantor, guarantee and shadow. The developing and rising Blue Homeland is very important for Turkey and Cyprus."
“The Cyprus Peace Operation is a Heroic Epic Written by Turkish Soldiers”
Governor Yerlikaya started his speech by emphasizing that July 20, 1974 was a glorious and blessed date. Stating that this date is the biggest holiday of the Turkish Cypriots, Governor Yerlikaya continued his speech as follows:
"I would like to express with pride and happiness on the 47th anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation that this holiday is also the holiday of our beloved Turkish Nation. The Cyprus Peace Operation, carried out by our heroic army in order to eliminate the oppression and persecution on our cognates in Cyprus, is a heroic epic written by our soldiers and mujahideen."
Explaining that July 20 was a cry for the existence of the Turkish Cypriots, who looked at the Taurus Mountains with hopeful and tearful eyes, Governor Yerlikaya said, "This is an epic response of our soldiers and mujahideen to the song titled "I've waited but you never showed up" (Bekledim de gelmedin).
Stating that Cyprus is the name of the love of the blue homeland, which does not fit into the seas, from the time of Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha, Kılıç Ali Pasha, and Cyprus Conqueror Lala Mustafa Pasha to today, Governor Yerlikaya continued as follows: "Cyprus has been our homeland, our name, our island since 1571. It is a Turkish Republic. The bond between the two countries is an unbreakable bond of family and love. That is because this land, like every inch of our Anatolia, is our homeland, watered with the blood of our martyrs and paid for with the lives of our martyrs. Those who do not take into account and consider our rights and existence here will receive the response they deserve in the future as they have done in the past. At the point we have reached today, it is obvious that the old understanding and the status quo cannot be continued."
Stating that the Republic of Turkey will continue to be the guarantor of peace, freedom and stability in Cyprus and in the Eastern Mediterranean, Governor Yerlikaya continued as follows: "We must commemorate two legendary names of the Cyprus national cause. Doctor Fazıl Küçük is a flagged name of the Cyprus cause, and Rauf Raif Denktaş is the person who planted this flag on the state. I commemorate both of them with mercy and gratitude.
Commemorating the late Bülent Ecevit and Necmettin Erbakan as the architects of the Peace Operation, as well as the Turkish soldiers and mujahideen who reached the level of martyrdom, with respect and mercy, Governor Yerlikaya commemorated the heroic veterans with gratitude.
The program ended with the presentation of a commemorative plaque to the President of the TRNC, Tatar, by the President of the Association, Eray.
