The Istanbul Marathon, which is the only marathon connecting two continents, was run for the 42nd time this year. The marathon, the route and start-end points of which are changed due to the coronavirus pandemic, broke grounds. During the marathon that started in Europe for the first time in its history this year, the July 15th Martyrs' Bridge was crossed twice.
The marathon organization, which started at the Yenikapı Meeting Area, started with a moment of silence for the citizens who lost their lives in the earthquake in Izmir.
Deputy Governor of Istanbul Mr. Niyazi Erten, in his speech he gave to the participants before the start, stated that he was happy to participate in the Istanbul Marathon, which is the only marathon in the world that can ensure people to run between two continents.
Referring to the importance of the marathon for Istanbul, Deputy Governor Erten noted that this year there were lots of firsts and that the marathon will be run with a limited number of participants within the scope of pandemic measures.
Deputy Governor Erten continued as follows: "This year we are experiencing new practices in the marathon. One of them is that it will be run from Europe to Asia for the first time. The other is that it will be run over the July 15th Martyrs' Bridge twice, which leads us to experience a first. Again, within the scope of pandemic measures, we carry out this activity with a limited number of athletes. We have organized this activity with the participation of nearly 400 male and female athletes from 45 countries and around 1,900 Turkish athletes.
This activity, which will be carried out without any audience within the scope of pandemic measures, also includes the biggest virtual run of Turkey. In the upcoming period, activities with wider participation will be possible as the pandemic conditions are overcome. It is a high-level organization in terms of pandemic measures such as mask, distance, hygiene, safe environment and HES code. I wish success to all athletes and may this event be beneficial to all of us."
"All COVID-19 Measures were Observed"
IMM Mayor İmamoğlu addressed the participants before the start and stated that the Istanbul Marathon is an important race worldwide. Expressing that they had the pleasure of hosting this event, IMM Mayor İmamoğlu stated as follows: "We would like to thank our Esteemed Deputy Governor, our Esteemed Federation President and also the general manager of N Kolay, the first sponsor of the marathon this year. In such a beautiful organization, all measures towards COVID-19 were observed. Of course, one would love to start this race on the bridge with hundreds of thousands of Istanbulites. However both the world and our country are going through such an important process at the moment. I hope that next year we will start the marathon with hundreds of thousands in our Istanbul that has overcome all its problems. We would like to thank all our guests who attended once more".
A First in the History of Marathon: The Athletes Crossed the Bridge Twice
In the marathon where there was no audience and public run this year due to pandemic conditions, the skate, wheelchair and elite athlete categories were started with 5 minutes intervals.
In the marathon, where the start and finish lines were at the same point, the competitors set off from Yenikapı and passed through Karaköy, Beşiktaş and July 15th Martyrs' Bridge. The contestants who made an u-turn from the Altunizade Junction passed again through the July 15th Martyrs' Bridge towards the finish line. Competitors, passing through Beşiktaş, Karaköy, Balat, Eminönü and Sirkeci respectively, completed the race in the Yenikapı activity area.
